Piano & keyboard lessons at Shoreview School of Music
-
Most students are ready to begin piano lessons around age 5 or 6. At this age, children can typically focus during lessons, follow directions and begin developing basic rhythm and coordination skills. Our instructors tailor each lesson to the student’s age, experience level and learning style to create a positive and engaging experience.
-
Students should have access to a piano or keyboard for regular practice between lessons. An 88-key weighted keyboard is recommended for the best learning experience, but beginners can often start with a smaller keyboard while building foundational skills. We offer beginner instruments for sale in our shop.
-
Yes. Students and families can purchase beginner keyboards, piano books, accessories and other music essentials directly from our shop at Shoreview School of Music. Every student progresses at a different pace based on age, practice habits and goals. Most beginners can start playing simple songs within the first few months. Consistent lessons and regular practice lead to steady long-term improvement and confidence at the piano.
-
We teach a wide variety of musical styles including classical, pop, rock, jazz, film music and contemporary piano. Lessons are personalized to help students stay motivated by learning music they enjoy.
-
Short, consistent practice sessions are more effective than occasional long sessions. Beginners typically benefit from practicing 15 to 30 minutes per day several times per week. As students advance, practice times may increase depending on goals and experience level.
-
Private piano lessons provide individualized instruction and personalized feedback, allowing students to progress at their own pace. Group experiences and performance opportunities can also be valuable for building confidence and musical collaboration. Many students benefit from a combination of both.
-
Yes. Students have opportunities to participate in recitals and performances throughout the year. Performances help build confidence, motivation and stage experience while giving families the opportunity to celebrate student progress.
-
Definitely. It is never too late to learn piano. Teen students often progress quickly because of their ability to focus, practice independently and connect emotionally with music they enjoy.

Piano lessons help develop concentration, discipline, memory, coordination and creativity. Music education also supports confidence, emotional expression and problem-solving skills that benefit students both inside and outside the classroom.
